Start With The Basics
I believe the underlying reason why, after decades of trying, I was finally able to reach my desired weight and can now maintain it easily, is because I significantly changed my belief system regarding weight and weight loss.
Furthermore, I’m absolutely certain it’s possible for you to do it too. However, changing one’s belief system is not an instantaneous process. It’s not as if I can walk up to you and tell you to believe this, this, this, and this, and getting to your desired weight will be easy for you too.
First of all, you already have your own beliefs on the subject that you’ve been reinforcing for decades. Overwriting those beliefs will take time and practice. Plus, the things I believe that make it easy for me may not impact you in the same way. It’s a very individual process.
A fundamental belief I’ve come to accept that has served me well is that anything a person desires is because they think they’ll feel better when they get it, but it actually works the other way around. They must create the feeling first, and the fruition of their desire will follow.
Hence, feeling happier is beneficial in achieving one's desires in general, but feeling better in regards to the particular subject of one’s desires is even more advantageous.
A good starting place for someone wanting to lose weight is to put their focus on feeling better physically.
What if you, at least temporarily, dropped the intention of losing weight and replaced it with the intention of feeling better physically?
I have my clients start with what I call The Basics: Sleep, Hydrate, Eat. I've found that when I suggest clients make changes in these three areas to feel better physically, they instinctively know what they need to do.
I recommend making sleep your number one priority. There is plenty of scientific evidence supporting the benefits of sleep in regards to weight loss, but I suggest getting plenty of sleep for the sole purpose of feeling better. When you are well-rested, you show up as a better person, make better decisions, are more productive, and just plain feel good. So, do what you can to get the best sleep possible.
I suggest making hydration your next priority. Again, there is tons of scientific documentation on the benefits of drinking water to lose weight, but I recommend you do it with the intention to feel better. Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue, brain fog, and an inability to focus. So, do yourself a favor and stay hydrated.
I propose you make eating your third priority. Most of the time we associate losing weight with not eating. But in order for you to feel good physically, your body needs fuel and nutrients, not to mention the pleasure we get from eating. My recommendation is to eat plenty of good-quality foods you enjoy in satisfying quantities that contribute to an overall feeling of physical well-being.
Getting to your desired weight and maintaining that weight for the rest of your life can be easy. It doesn't require drastic, uncomfortable changes. Easy, subtle shifts in mindset and action will get you there.
